NAFDAC Evacuates 50 Truckloads Of Fake Drugs From Onitsha Market, Recovers Rifle

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken away 50 truckloads of fake drugs from the Bridge Head Drug Market in Onitsha, Anambra State.

During the operation, which started on February 10, the agency also discovered dangerous weapons, including rifles and machetes, hidden in the market.

According to NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, the discovery of weapons was alarming.

She suggested that the weapons might have been meant for an attack on the agency’s South-East Zonal Director, Dr. Martins Iluyomade. The agency also stopped two attempts by hoodlums to break into storage facilities where the seized drugs were kept.

Two suspects have been arrested and are helping with investigations. Despite resistance from criminals, NAFDAC has assured the public that the operation will continue to remove fake and harmful medicines from circulation.

Prof. Adeyeye praised market leaders for their cooperation and confirmed that some sections of the market would reopen soon. The fake drugs have been moved to a secure location for further action.

This crackdown is part of a national effort to make sure that only genuine medicines are available to the public. NAFDAC remains committed to protecting people from harmful drugs and ensuring public health safety.
