Four Dead in Enugu-Onitsha Expressway Accident

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that four people died in a severe road accident on the Ugwu Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Highway.

Mr. Adeyemi Sokunbi, the FRSC Enugu State Commander, confirmed the accident on Wednesday in Enugu.

Sokunbi stated that the accident occurred between 6:45 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on June 11, when a kerosene-laden trailer lost control and collided with six other vehicles.

He mentioned that two individuals died on the spot among the 29 involved, while two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

Sokunbi added that the FRSC used their Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ambulance and other vehicles to transport 10 injured people to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu.

The deceased were taken to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUT) Park Lane morgue.

The commander also noted that items belonging to the victims were retrieved at the accident scene.

He explained that the truck lost its brakes and crashed into six vehicles, including cars and a bus, on the newly reconstructed part of the Enugu-Onitsha Highway.

He said,

“We are thanking God that the truck that failed break was not conveying petrol, which is extremely inflammable.

“Motorists and all road users in general, have to be very careful on the road.
“We advise that all should put their vehicle in order and at an optimal condition before setting out on journeys.

“You cannot afford to put a mechanically deficient vehicle on the road to cause harm to many others using the same road,” he added.
