Edwin Clark dies at 97

Edwin Clark, a well-known leader from South-South Nigeria and former Federal Commissioner for Information, has passed away.

His family confirmed that he died on Monday night, February 17, 2025, at the age of 97.

The statement read, 

“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark OFR, CON on Monday 17th February , 2025. The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Other details will be announced later by the family.”

Clark was born in Kiagbodo, a town in the Ijaw region of present-day Delta State. He attended primary and secondary school in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene before continuing his studies at the Government Teacher Training College. This institution later became Delta State University, Abraka.

After completing his education, he briefly worked as a schoolteacher before traveling abroad to study law. He later became involved in Nigerian politics and served in government under military leaders. Between 1966 and 1975, he worked with military governor Samuel Ogbemudia and head of state General Yakubu Gowon.

In 1966, he was part of an advisory committee for Mid-Western Region governor David Ejoor. In 1975, he was appointed Federal Commissioner for Information.

Edwin Clark was also the chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), where he played a major role in advocating for the rights of the Niger Delta people.
