A top member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Fouad Oki, has warned that the ongoing crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly is becoming a serious problem.
He said that if the situation is not handled properly, it could become the worst political crisis in Nigeria.
Oki made this statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday. His warning came after security officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) entered the Assembly complex.
Armed security officers stopped the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, from entering the Assembly chamber. She was only allowed in after several hours. When she finally took her seat, she became emotional as lawmakers expressed their support for her.
Oki compared the Lagos Assembly crisis to political problems in other states, saying:
“If you look at what happened today and compare it to the mayhem in Rivers, Osun, and Kano, the Lagos situation will make them look small.”
The crisis started after the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. However, Obasa has rejected his removal, calling it illegal, and has taken the matter to court.
Oki criticized the situation, calling it a shame and a setback for democracy in Nigeria.
“Today is a sad day for me and for all who believe in democracy,” he said.
He also promised to stand up for democracy, saying that he and his fellow activists, who had fought for democracy in the past, would not allow lawlessness to take over.
“We will risk our lives again to defend democracy,” he added.
The Lagos Assembly crisis is still unfolding, and many Nigerians are watching to see how it will be resolved.
