Accidental airstrike allegedly kills family of 6 in Katsina

A tragic incident occurred in Katsina State as a military airstrike mistakenly hit Yauni community in Zakka ward, Safana Local Government Area, allegedly killing a family of six.

According to reports, the airstrike happened after a deadly clash between security forces and bandits.

Earlier that day, two police officers and an operative from the state-run Community Watch Corps (CWC) lost their lives during a gun battle with the criminals. A third police officer, who was injured, later passed away.

A local resident, speaking anonymously, said the violence was linked to the local government election that took place on Saturday, February 15, 2025.

The bandits had allegedly planned to attack voters in Zakka village. However, security personnel moved in to prevent the attack, which led to an exchange of gunfire.

After the battle, a military fighter jet, possibly sent for reinforcement, mistakenly dropped a bomb on Yauni community, south of Zakka. The explosion resulted in the deaths of six family members, while a woman sustained injuries.

This heartbreaking event has raised concerns about the safety of civilians during security operations in the region.
