Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has assured fans that Victor Boniface is not troubled by his failed transfer to Saudi club Al Nassr.
The Nigerian striker was close to a move in January, with Al Nassr offering him a lucrative €15 million per season contract.
However, the deal collapsed after the Saudi club decided to sign Aston Villa’s Jhon Durán instead in a €77 million deal, including add-ons.
Boniface, who recently recovered from a thigh injury, has already made a strong return to Leverkusen. He played in their last three matches and scored two goals.
Speaking about the situation, Alonso said Boniface was open to leaving but is now focused on staying.
“These things happen,” Alonso told the Bundesliga website. “We talked before the transfer window. He was open to moving, but he’s happy here. That’s why I don’t think it will stress him. He’ll adjust and focus on his role in the team.”
With Boniface back in action, Leverkusen will count on his goal-scoring ability as they continue their strong season in the Bundesliga.
