Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that no leader can be truly successful without stepping on a few toes along the way.
He made this remark during a visit by Dr. Dayo Israel, the new chairman of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
Obasanjo explained that leaders must be prepared to make tough decisions, even if it means upsetting others. He stressed that if you’re not stepping on toes, you may not be effective in your role.
As an example, Obasanjo shared a personal story from his time after leaving office as Head of State. He recalled how he had to send his daughter home from his farm because she was consistently late for work.
Despite being his daughter, Obasanjo explained that he had to set an example for his employees. He said, “If Baba could do this to his daughter, who are we?”
While advising the new chairman, Obasanjo reminded him to be fair, just, and humane in his leadership.
He also praised the current Medical Director, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, for his significant achievements at the Centre.
Dr. Israel, in his remarks, referred to Obasanjo as a wise and respected leader, aiming to turn the Centre into a world-class medical institution.
