Protest erupts in Rivers as police officer shoots man dead

There was chaos in the Omagwa community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, after a police officer allegedly shot and killed a young man named Chikuma Egbule.

The officer, attached to the Omagwa Division of the Rivers State Police Command, reportedly opened fire on the youth, leading to widespread anger in the community.

As news of the incident spread, angry residents gathered in protest. They initially took the victim’s body to the Omagwa Divisional Police Station, intending to leave it there as a form of protest. However, the officers on duty prevented them from doing so.

The protesters then blocked a major road, causing heavy traffic congestion. The affected highway connects to the Port Harcourt International Airport and also leads to Owerri, Imo State.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed that the officer responsible for the shooting had been arrested.

She assured the public that normalcy had been restored, and security personnel were on the ground to prevent further violence.

She also stated that the victim’s body had been moved to a morgue while an investigation into the incident was ongoing
