One Dead, Over 30 Trapped as Mining Pit Collapses in Niger State

One person has died and more than 30 people are trapped after a mining site collapsed in Galgoko village, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed that the collapse happened on June 3, 2024.

Reports indicate that the site manager, Alhaji Ibrahim Ishaku, is among those trapped, while six people have been rescued.

Baba-Arah mentioned that rescue efforts are challenging due to the tough terrain and ongoing bandit activities in the area.

 he also said,

“NSEMA received a report of a mining pit collapse at Galkogo village of Shiroro LGA. The mine site belongs to a company named “African Minerals and Logistics limited.”

“The collapse was as a result of the rainfall impacts that soften the soil,”

“Due to the unacceptable nature of that environment as a result of banditry, the information of the incident is very scanty, including rescue operations. Meanwhile, excavators have been deployed for the rescue operations,”
