BREAKING: Senate Names Orji Uzor Kalu SEDC Committee Chairman

The Nigerian Senate has appointed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC).

Kalu, who represents Abia North, will oversee the commission’s activities to promote growth and development in the South East region.

The South East Development Commission (SEDC) is a newly established body focused on improving infrastructure, tackling erosion, restoring security, and boosting economic growth in Nigeria’s South East.

President Bola Tinubu signed the commission into law to address key challenges in the region.

Before this appointment, Kalu served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation.

He also led an ad hoc screening committee for the North West and South East regional development commissions.

His new role will involve managing the SEDC’s operations and ensuring its goals are met.

During a plenary session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced that Senator Ken Eze (Ebonyi Central) will serve as Vice Chairman of the committee. Other members of the committee will be revealed soon.

The Senate has also confirmed an 18-member SEDC board, including:

  • Dr. Emeka Nworgu – Chairman
  • Hon. Mark Okoye – Managing Director/CEO
  • Other members: Ugochukwu H. Agballah, Hon. Okey Izenwa, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, Chidi Echeazu, Ifeanyi Agwu, and more.
