Sokoto State has successfully vaccinated 95% of its livestock to prevent anthrax and other diseases, as part of its efforts to protect public health. The vaccination drive comes after a warning from the Federal Government about potential anthrax outbreaks, especially following confirmed cases in neighboring Zamfara State.

Dr. Nasiru Abdulrahaman, the Director of Veterinary Services in Sokoto, shared that the state had previously dealt with an anthrax outbreak in Danchadi village, Bodinga Local Government Area. In response to this, the Federal Government provided Sokoto with 800,000 doses of anthrax vaccine, helping to curb the spread of the disease.

The vaccination campaign, which started months ago, is still ongoing, and the state is using technology to track the progress. GPS cameras are being used to monitor vaccinators and ensure that the vaccines are being delivered to all 23 local government areas in Sokoto. This method helps verify that the vaccinations are happening in the right locations.

Additionally, Sokoto State is committed to ensuring meat safety. Around 200 veterinary doctors are stationed at abattoirs across the state to conduct pre- and post-slaughter inspections. This is to guarantee that the meat sold in markets is safe for consumers.

Abubakar Yabo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Animal Health and Fishery Development, encouraged residents to support the government’s efforts in maintaining healthy livestock. He also reminded cattle owners that they can take advantage of free artificial insemination services offered by the ministry to improve livestock production. Of the 1,000 doses of semen donated by the Indonesian government, only 250 have been used so far, and the process is free of charge for all cattle owners.

With these initiatives, Sokoto State is actively working to prevent disease outbreaks and ensure the safety of both livestock and meat products for its residents.
