Enugu/Onitsha Expressway: Works minister wants MTN to commit N15bn monthly

The Federal Ministry of Works has asked MTN to invest N15 billion each month for the next 10 months to speed up the completion of the Enugu/Onitsha Expressway. This request comes after a devastating tanker explosion at the Ugwu Onyeama section of the road, which caused several deaths.

The Ministry made it clear that if MTN does not meet this demand, they could consider canceling the project. The matter was discussed during a visit from Anambra and Enugu lawmakers, who came to the Ministry to seek help in completing the road.

MTN is funding the road project through the Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme, with RCC Ltd handling the construction. It was agreed that three contractors will work on the 79 km section of the road, while the remaining 72 km will be awarded to new contractors. MTN and RCC will also be invited to bid for these sections.

David Umahi, the Minister of Works, expressed deep concern over the recent tragedy and assured the people of South-East Nigeria that President Bola Tinubu is dedicated to improving the region’s infrastructure. Umahi stressed that the administration is focused on boosting transportation in the South-East, as well as other regions of the country.

Senator Osita Ngwu, the leader of the delegation, acknowledged the government’s efforts in building and maintaining roads across the country but raised concerns about the lack of sufficient funding for some projects, particularly the Enugu/Onitsha Expressway. He pointed out that some parts of the road have become dangerous to drivers and urged that funding be increased to ensure the project’s timely completion.

The lawmakers expressed their commitment to supporting the Ministry in overcoming challenges that might delay the road’s completion and ensuring that vital infrastructure in the region is finished as soon as possible.
