A 22-year-old man, Jamiu Malomo, has been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of a sex worker, Asisat Akande. Malomo, who was recently released from prison, killed Akande in July 2021 after a disagreement over payment.

Malomo, who had been convicted in the past, picked up Akande from a bar in Panseke and took her to his house for sexual services. During their interaction, a heated argument broke out when Malomo refused to pay the full amount they had agreed on. In the midst of the argument, Malomo stabbed Akande with a knife, leading to her death.

“You are hereby guilty of k!lling Asisat Akande as preferred against you. You will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on you,” the judge held.

The Ogun State High Court convicted Malomo of murder, finding him guilty beyond reasonable doubt. The judge noted that Malomo’s actions violated the Ogun State Criminal Code, and the prosecution proved its case thoroughly.

The tragic event took place at Ori-Apata in Oke-Aregba, Abeokuta, where Malomo was arrested shortly after by the police.

“After having carnal knowledge of the deceased, she demanded for N10,000 which was their agreement, but he refused to give her the complete money saying he had N8,000,” he said.

“The situation led to an argument between him and the deceased ,which made the convict to bring out a knife from his pocket and stab her in the neck.

“The stab resulted in the instant d3ath of the deceased.”

Malomo’s sentence comes as a reminder of the serious consequences for violent crimes, and the case has drawn attention to issues related to sex work and criminal justice in Nigeria.
