NDLEA arraigns woman and two others for importing 28kg drug

A woman named Oluwakemi Akala and two men, Onyekachi Aguguo and Tsolaye Eburajolo, were arraigned in the Federal High Court in Lagos on January 21, 2025. They face charges of illegally importing 28 kilograms of Cannabis Indica, a narcotic similar to cocaine, heroin, and LSD.

The charges include conspiracy and unlawful importation. The prosecution, from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), said the crime happened on October 22, 2024, in an offloading warehouse in Okota, Lagos. The defendants are accused of hiding the drugs inside a 2010 Lexus RX350 vehicle.

During the court session, the three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecutor asked for a trial date and requested that the defendants be remanded in the correctional center. The defense lawyers for the defendants requested a short time to file bail applications, which was granted by the court.

After reviewing the bail applications, Justice Ayokunle Faji set the bail amount at N8 million for each defendant. They must also provide two sureties, with one surety being a blood relative. The sureties must meet several requirements, including proof of residence, identification, and financial stability.

The judge also ordered the accused to submit their travel documents and not to leave the country without court permission. The documents must be verified within three days.

Until the bail conditions are met, the defendants will remain in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Centre.
