Naira Marley’s Cybercrime Trial was halted at the Federal High Court

The cybercrime trial of singer Azeez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, was halted at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday.

The trial could not continue because the approval of a special authorization (fiat) from the chief judge of the Federal High Court is still pending.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is accusing Fashola of cybercrime activities.

The charges were brought against him on May 14, 2019.

Fashola, who is known for the song “Am I a Yahoo Boy,” pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned on May 20, 2019, before Justice Nicholas Oweibo.

Justice Oweibo granted him bail set at two million naira with two sureties of the same amount.

The EFCC was still presenting its witnesses when Justice Oweibo was transferred from the Lagos division of the court.

The case was reassigned to Justice Isaac Dipeolu.

On March 6, during the first hearing before Justice Dipeolu, both the defense and prosecution lawyers confirmed that they were waiting for a decision from the chief judge on the pending fiat.

The judge adjourned the case until May 30 for an update on the fiat.

On Thursday, journalists found out that the fiat had not yet been approved.

There is no new date set for the trial to continue.

According to the EFCC, Fashola committed the alleged crimes on various dates between November 26, 2018, and December 11, 2018, as well as on May 10, 2019.

The commission claims that Fashola and his accomplices used different Access Bank ATM cards to defraud victims.

They also allege that he used a credit card issued to another person to gain money fraudulently.

Additionally, the EFCC claims that Fashola had fake credit cards belonging to various individuals, intending to defraud them, which they classify as theft.

These allegations violate Sections 1 23 (1) (b), 27 (1), and 33(9) of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition) Prevention Act, 2015.
