The Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State is witnessing growing tension over the prolonged closure of its council secretariat. Supporters of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and former council chairman Samuel Nwanosike recently protested, issuing a warning to the police against reopening the secretariat. The building has been closed since it was destroyed in a political arson attack last year.
On the other hand, the current council chairman, Hon. Israel Abosi, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the ongoing barricade of the secretariat. During a visit to the police, he called for the removal of the barricades and the reopening of the facility to allow administrative work to resume.
Notably, the Ikwerre Council Secretariat is the only one still shut down after attacks on several council secretariats in Rivers State last October. While other local government offices have reopened, Ikwerre’s situation remains unresolved, fueling frustration among residents and political stakeholders.
As calls for action grow louder, all eyes are now on the police and government authorities to address the lingering issue and restore normalcy in the local government area.
