Chinese officials are reportedly in talks about the possibility of selling TikTok’s U.S. operations to Elon Musk. This comes as the app faces a potential ban in the United States. While the Chinese government would prefer that ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, keeps control of the app, there have been discussions about a possible sale to Musk.
If Musk were to buy TikTok’s U.S. operations, it would give him control over two of the largest social media platforms in the world: X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok. This would place him in a unique position, especially considering his advisory role with former President Donald Trump.
ByteDance has denied the reports, calling them “pure fiction,” and downplayed the possibility of a sale.
Earlier this year, U.S. lawmakers passed a bill that could lead to a TikTok ban unless the company finds a new owner. U.S. officials argue that TikTok could be a national security threat due to its connections to China and concerns about the safety of American user data. However, TikTok and ByteDance have denied these accusations and are currently challenging the potential ban in the Supreme Court.
During a recent court session, the justices questioned the government’s concerns about the app. Chief Justice John Roberts pointed out that the government is more focused on China’s control over TikTok rather than the content shared on the platform. Justice Elena Kagan added that the law targeting TikTok is focused on the foreign corporation, which doesn’t have First Amendment rights.
As the January 19 deadline approaches for the ban, Donald Trump has spoken out in support of TikTok, promising to save the app in the U.S. once he takes office. He campaigned on the promise to resolve the situation and keep TikTok available to American users.
