An Enugu High Court has issued a stern warning to Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that he risks going to prison if he continues to present himself as the party’s secretary. The court, led by Judge C.O. Ajah, emphasized that Anyanwu must stop acting as the PDP’s National Secretary, or he will be held in contempt of court and face imprisonment.
The judgment stems from a case filed by Emmanuel Aniagu against Anyanwu, the PDP, and other party officials. The court ruling clarified that Anyanwu was elected as National Secretary of the PDP in 2021. However, due to his actions, including his involvement in appointing members to key party committees, the court decided that he had effectively relinquished the position. Furthermore, Anyanwu’s role as the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate for Imo State in the 2023 election created a conflict of interest, leading to the court’s decision.
In its ruling, the court directed the PDP to recognize Hon. S.K.E. Udeh Okoye, who was recommended by the Southeast Zonal Executive Committee, as the new National Secretary. The judgment states that Okoye should serve out the remainder of the term Anyanwu held as the National Secretary.
The court gave Anyanwu a final chance to comply with the order. If he fails to stop acting as National Secretary, he will face legal consequences, including a possible prison sentence.
