Oshiomhole backs House of Assembly’s suspension of council chairmen, deputies

Adams Oshiomhole, former Governor of Edo State and current senator representing Edo North, has expressed his support for the suspension of 18 local government chairmen and their deputies by the Edo State House of Assembly. The suspension followed allegations of insubordination and misconduct.

Speaking at his residence in Iyamho, Oshiomhole claimed the suspended officials had been making large payments to Godwin Obaseki, the previous governor of the state. He praised the current governor, Monday Okpebholo, for halting these practices. According to Oshiomhole, the new administration is focused on improving governance and ensuring that local government funds are used for development instead of corruption.

On December 17, 2024, the Edo State House of Assembly suspended the council chairmen for two months after receiving a petition from Governor Okpebholo. The petition accused the chairmen of failing to submit their financial statements to the state government, which is a legal requirement.

In addition, Oshiomhole took the opportunity to praise Governor Okpebholo for his leadership during the first month of his tenure. He commended Okpebholo for setting a new record in governance and expressed confidence that Edo people would now experience true leadership after years of unfulfilled promises under Obaseki.

This suspension highlights the ongoing changes in Edo State’s political environment, as the new administration works to establish a more accountable and transparent government.
