Ohanaeze Ndigbo has extended warm Christmas greetings to Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora. However, the group, led by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, has expressed deep concern over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu. In a recent statement, they highlighted that the prolonged imprisonment of Kanu is troubling, especially as it continues to impact the region.
Isiguzoro pointed out that some influential political leaders, including two current governors and a former governor, are behind Kanu’s continued detention. According to Isiguzoro, these leaders are driven by personal ambitions, particularly regarding the upcoming 2027 vice-presidential race. He accused them of secretly undermining calls for Kanu’s release, while publicly claiming to support it.
The statement further accused these leaders of being responsible for the growing insecurity and violence in the Southeast. Isiguzoro claimed that these leaders fail in their duties to address the region’s problems, instead benefiting from the security funds allocated to them amid the unrest. He warned that their focus on personal gain rather than regional stability is dangerous.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo also criticized the lack of action from one governor, who has remained neutral on the issue. This, they said, shows the governor’s main concern is securing re-election, rather than addressing the serious issues facing the people of the Southeast.
In conclusion, Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized that the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu and the failure of these political leaders to act in the best interest of the region threaten peace and stability in the Southeast.
