The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has proposed ₦35 million in its 2025 budget to enhance cybersecurity. This step follows a cyberattack on its website on December 18, 2024. The attack happened shortly after the bureau released a report on crime and security in Nigeria.
In the report, the NBS disclosed that Nigerians paid ₦2.23 trillion in ransom to kidnappers between May 2023 and April 2024.
The bureau’s overall 2025 budget is ₦9.85 billion, which includes allocations for several key projects:
- ₦500 million for the Labour Force Survey
- ₦80 million for producing the Consumer Price Index
- ₦60 million for quarterly GDP compilations
- ₦55 million for the National Agricultural Sample Survey
- ₦50 million for tracking the government’s 8-Point Agenda
- ₦45 million for service delivery capacity building
- ₦15 million for demographic statistics
- ₦9 million for the Annual Abstract of Statistics
These projects are designed to improve the quality of data collection and analysis in Nigeria, supporting better decision-making for the country’s development.
