Chinedu Stanley Asuzu, the younger brother of late Nollywood star Ernest Asuzu, has been tragically murdered in South Africa. The 42-year-old Nigerian was shot dead by gunmen at his residence in Johannesburg South on December 16, 2024.
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) confirmed the heartbreaking news on December 22, 2024. According to a statement signed by the union’s National Publicity Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, NUSA has condemned the brutal killing and is working closely with South African authorities to ensure justice is served.
Family Disputes Surrounding the Incident
Chinedu was reportedly in the middle of a divorce and property settlement with his estranged South African wife, Mrs. Busisiwe Sibanyoni. The NUSA President-General, Hon. Smart Nwobi, tried contacting Mrs. Sibanyoni regarding the incident but was unable to reach her. The union’s legal team is actively assisting Chinedu’s family during this difficult time.
A witness at the scene of the shooting provided details of the investigating officer, confirming that a murder investigation is underway. NUSA assured the family of comprehensive support while urging the South African police to apprehend the perpetrators swiftly.
Allegations Against the Ex-Wife
A Nigerian man identified as Mr. Ade has called attention to Chinedu’s ex-wife, alleging she has seized the deceased’s body. According to Ade, Mrs. Sibanyoni visited Chinedu’s house to pick up their children, even though it was his scheduled time with them. Shortly after her visit, armed men attacked and killed him.
Ade further claimed that Chinedu and Mrs. Sibanyoni were divorcing because of alleged financial misuse. He stated that all of Chinedu’s assets, including his finances, were in her name due to his lack of a South African residential permit.
Concerns Over the Body
Ade has appealed to the Nigerian embassy to intervene, pleading with Busisiwe to return the body to Chinedu’s family. He warned that holding onto the corpse could lead to spiritual consequences. According to Ade, a friend of Mrs. Sibanyoni alleged that she fears the family may perform traditional rituals to seek justice for Chinedu’s death.
