In a recent operation by the Imo State Police Command, two officers sadly lost their lives while confronting a dangerous kidnapping gang in Owerri West Local Government Area. The operation, carried out by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, targeted a group involved in kidnapping and armed robbery in the region.
The operation led to the elimination of three suspects, and the police were able to recover significant items from the gang, including six AK-47 rifles, 131 rounds of live ammunition, a locally made gun, and two stolen vehicles. The Mercedes Benz ML 350 and Hijet shuttle bus had been used by the gang during their criminal activities.
The captured suspects, identified as David Ifeanyichukwu (20) and Abuchi Joseph (24), were connected to the kidnapping of Osuji Caleb Chimereze and three others in November 2024. During that crime, the gang had also stolen the victims’ valuable possessions, including a luxury car.
The police operation followed months of intelligence gathering and investigation. Sadly, two police officers were injured in the confrontation and later died from their wounds.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers in their fight against crime and the continuing efforts to combat kidnapping and robbery in the region.
