During a recent media chat in Lagos, President Bola Tinubu advised Nigerians to manage their electricity use in order to lower their bills. He suggested that switching off lights when they are not needed could help reduce energy consumption and save money. He emphasized the importance of learning how to control costs, saying, “It’s not negative to learn to manage. You learn to control your electricity bill, switch off the light, let’s learn to manage.”
Tinubu also expressed his opposition to price control, stating that his government would focus on increasing supply rather than controlling prices. His administration has already made significant changes, such as raising electricity tariffs and removing fuel subsidies. On April 3, 2024, the electricity tariff for customers in the Band A classification increased from N66 to N225 per kilowatt hour, which led to criticism from many Nigerians due to the higher financial strain it caused.
