Uche Secondus, former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recently criticized Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. At the launch of a road project in Rivers State on December 18, 2024, Secondus reminded Wike that his rise to power was not solely because of his efforts but because of God and the support of other leaders.
Secondus’ comments come amid an ongoing feud between Wike and Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara. The two have been battling for control of the state’s political structure, which has caused a political crisis. Their conflict has led to differing court orders and a divided Rivers House of Assembly. Earlier this year, Wike accused Secondus and other PDP leaders of backing Fubara, calling Secondus an “expired politician” and unworthy of being considered an “elder statesman.”
“Those who are shouting in Abuja, how were they made? It was God. Some of us, and the leaders seated here today, made it possible. God first, because we do not want to take God’s glory.
I can recall during my Thanksgiving service, immediately after I was made national chairman, he said it clearly, outside God, it was my humble self and other leaders who made it possible. Today, when he speaks, either in Abuja or here, it appears as if he fell from heaven.” he said
In his response, Secondus praised Fubara, calling him a man who respects his elders and has few words, further highlighting the growing tension between the former allies.
“I can tell you, the test of a leader is when you find yourself in confusion and frustration, yet come out of it with even greater faith. Like Governor Fubara, you will see the real leader of the people. He is not a man who seeks accolades. We have seen him. Do not worry. Power comes from God. The same way God gave it to him through us, God has given it to you. From what we are seeing, you will excel. One thing that is important in the Ten Commandments is, ‘love your neighbour as yourself’. You are spreading that part of the Ten Commandments across our state. You love everybody. You respect leaders and elders, and all we can do is pray for you.” he said
