Nigeria on right track to fighting corruption – UN

Nigeria is making progress in the fight against corruption, according to a recent statement from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Mr. Cheikh Toure, the UNODC Country Representative, shared these positive findings during the 2024 International Anti-Corruption Day event held in Abuja.

A recent national corruption survey conducted by UNODC shows that more Nigerians are standing up against corruption. The survey revealed that 70% of Nigerians, including a significant number of young people, have refused to pay bribes at least once. This marks an important shift in attitudes toward corruption, as more citizens are demanding accountability from public officials.

The survey also highlighted a substantial increase in formal actions taken against corrupt public officials. The number of cases has grown from 16% in 2019 to 45% in 2023, demonstrating a stronger commitment to addressing corruption at the highest levels.

Mr. Toure emphasized that the growing number of people who refuse to pay bribes, especially because they believe it is the right thing to do, is a key factor in this progress. He also pointed out that this attitude is the foundation upon which Nigeria can continue to build its anti-corruption efforts.

While the progress is encouraging, Mr. Toure reminded that there is still much work to be done. He urged the need for continued efforts to promote integrity, transparency, and accountability in the public sector. He also called for the empowerment of youth, who are disproportionately impacted by corruption, to play a central role in the fight against it. Corruption affects resources for vital services like education and healthcare, and stifles opportunities for young people.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Toure remains hopeful, saying that the youth are not just victims but also powerful agents of change. With their involvement, Nigeria can continue to make strides toward a corruption-free future.
