Dele Farotimi’s Arrest and Charges
The Ekiti State Police Command recently arrested Dele Farotimi at his office in Lagos over allegations of defamation. He was charged for claims made in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, where he accused Aare Afe Babalola of influencing Supreme Court judgments and corrupting the judiciary. These allegations allegedly harmed Afe Babalola’s reputation and career.
Court Proceedings
Farotimi faced 16 charges in court and pleaded not guilty to all of them. During the session, the police prosecutor, Samson Osun, requested that Farotimi remain in prison custody while investigations continue. Osun argued that his detention was necessary to maintain security.
Defense Argument
In response, Farotimi’s lawyer, Dayo Akeredolu, opposed the remand request and appealed for bail on lenient terms. He argued that the charges were bailable and that Farotimi, as a respected public figure, was not a security threat. Akeredolu also reminded the court that the law presumes his client innocent until proven guilty.
Court Ruling
Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ruled for Farotimi to remain in prison custody and adjourned the hearing until December 10, 2024.
