Supreme court dismisses suit challenging establishment of EFCC act

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed a lawsuit filed by some state Attorneys General challenging the creation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Act.

The case began with 16 states seeking to abolish the EFCC. Over time, some states pulled out, while others joined the suit as co-plaintiffs. The states that initially filed the lawsuit include Ondo, Edo, Oyo, Ogun, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Katsina, Sokoto, Jigawa, Enugu, Benue, Anambra, Plateau, Cross River, and Niger.

At a hearing on October 22, Imo, Bauchi, and Osun states joined as co-plaintiffs, while Anambra, Ebonyi, and Adamawa announced their withdrawal. The Supreme Court struck out the cases of those that withdrew and ultimately dismissed the entire suit.

This ruling reinforces the EFCC’s legal standing as Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency. The court’s decision highlights the importance of the EFCC in fighting corruption and maintaining financial accountability across the country.
