Peter Obi, who ran for president in Nigeria in 2023 under the Labour Party, recently shared his support for Nigerian students and healthcare workers, especially nurses, seeking better opportunities abroad. He suggested that while Nigeria faces challenges, its young people and professionals might improve their lives and gain valuable experience by working in other countries.

Obi spoke about this during an event where he made a donation of N50 million to Peter University in Achina/Onneh and N10 million to the School of Nursing Sciences in Adazi-Nnukwu. His advice reflects his understanding of the struggles faced by students and healthcare professionals in Nigeria.

He believes that, with current economic and social challenges, young Nigerians might benefit from gaining international experience, which could later help Nigeria. Obi hopes these individuals will return home once the situation in the country improves, bringing back knowledge and skills that can contribute to Nigeria’s growth.

Obi’s words resonate with many Nigerians who dream of building successful careers abroad while remaining hopeful that they can eventually return to make a positive impact in their homeland.

Addressing students of the College of Nursing Sciences in Adazi-Nnukwu, Obi said;

“I have always told the Nursing Council not to restrict you people from travelling abroad after graduation. If it is not going to work for you here, go to where it will work for you.

We will not advise anyone to stay where it is difficult for them. If you want to seek greener pastures outside, please go. I’m sure that when we build a greater Nigeria, you will come back.

My PA, Michael-Jude who was here with me the last time I came here has travelled abroad. He got married to a nurse, and the UK government granted his wife and her husband all rights to study, and he is now in UK. As I am now, I am looking for a new PA,”
