Ekiti State Grants Licenses to Investors for Local Electricity Generation and Distribution

Ekiti State is taking a big step towards achieving energy independence with a new initiative that promises better power supply and management. Recently, the state government granted licenses to 14 investors in the electricity sector to help generate and distribute electricity across Ekiti. Here’s what this means:

The licenses have been given to:

  • 3 electricity distribution companies
  • 4 electricity generation companies
  • 2 mini-grid generation companies
  • 5 meter asset providers

This setup aims to improve electricity generation, streamline distribution, and ensure accurate metering for residents. With more local players involved, Ekiti State hopes to meet its energy needs more effectively.

Currently, Ekiti receives around 20-25 MW from the national grid, which is far below the estimated 120 MW the state needs. To solve this problem, the state aims to generate up to 130 MW on its own through a state-run grid. By producing more electricity locally, Ekiti can rely less on the national grid and focus on sustainable, locally managed energy.

This project aligns with the 2023 Electricity Law, which allows states to manage electricity markets independently. This law gives Ekiti the freedom to license companies that meet local energy needs, encouraging growth and stability.

Thank you to everyone who supports this vision for a brighter, self-reliant Ekiti. This initiative is more than just about power; it’s about economic growth, job opportunities, and a better quality of life for everyone in Ekiti State.
