The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has addressed the recent nationwide power outage, citing “a series of line and generator trips” as the primary cause. This incident led to a grid collapse that disrupted electricity supply across Nigeria around 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the grid disturbance began at approximately 1:52 p.m., affecting several power generation plants and resulting in a significant power loss. However, data from the National Control Centre (NCC) indicated that not all parts of the grid were affected. Some areas managed to maintain power, demonstrating that the outage was not a complete nationwide blackout but rather a partial disturbance that impacted certain regions more severely.
In response to the outage, Mbah explained that TCN engineers quickly mobilized to restore power to the affected areas. By 2:49 p.m., they had managed to reestablish bulk power supply to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. TCN has since been working to restore power to other regions gradually, assuring the public of ongoing efforts to stabilize the grid.
Beyond just the technical response, Mbah extended an apology to customers for the disruption, acknowledging the inconvenience caused. “We sincerely apologize for every inconvenience this may cause our electricity customers,” Mbah said. She emphasized TCN’s commitment to restoring power as quickly and efficiently as possible.
This recent grid collapse has raised concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with recurring outages affecting both daily life and economic activities. TCN’s acknowledgment of line and generator tripping as causes highlights some of the challenges in managing the country’s power grid. The company has emphasized that it is continuously working on measures to minimize such incidents and improve the reliability of power supply across the nation.
As engineers work to stabilize the grid and prevent future disturbances, TCN assures the public that it is also investing in long-term solutions to enhance the resilience of Nigeria’s power infrastructure. The company is aware of the critical role that electricity plays in daily life and economic growth and remains focused on delivering consistent power supply to all regions.
