We Can Thrive Without Nigeria’s Support In Ogun Say’s Governor Abiodun

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State recently expressed confidence in the state’s economic independence. Speaking at the launch of Olumo Courts, a modern serviced apartment complex in Abeokuta, he emphasized that Ogun is one of the few Nigerian states that could thrive without federal assistance.

Governor Abiodun explained that his administration has strengthened Ogun’s economy through policies that boost internally generated revenue (IGR). This focus on economic self-sufficiency has made Ogun one of Nigeria’s top revenue-generating states. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) recently reported that Nigeria’s states collectively earned N2.43 trillion in IGR in 2023, a 26.5% increase from the previous year. Abiodun highlighted Ogun’s achievement in surpassing several states’ revenue generation.

The governor also spoke about his administration’s urban renewal projects, specifically in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Ibara, Abeokuta. Despite facing criticism, he stressed the importance of such investments for Ogun’s development.

The recently launched Olumo Courts is a prime example of these efforts. This luxury development includes 36 high-end apartments with features like a swimming pool, gym, tennis court, and squash court. Governor Abiodun credited former President Olusegun Obasanjo for supporting the project, which he believes will attract investments, create jobs, and draw Nigerians from abroad to invest in Ogun.

At the event, former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo praised Abeokuta’s unique charm and natural beauty, describing it as a place ready to welcome people worldwide. Project team member Rotimi Martins noted that Olumo Courts is the first smart city project within the GRA, bringing a new level of modernity to the area. Additionally, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, commended the project, emphasizing how environmental improvements like Olumo Courts can drive growth and prosperity.

Governor Abiodun’s vision for Ogun State is clear: a self-sustaining economy with a focus on growth, urban renewal, and innovation. Through projects like Olumo Courts, Ogun is well on its way to achieving a modern, prosperous future.
