President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made new appointments to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), bringing in experienced professionals to fill key roles.
Tinubu appointed Abdulrazak Yusuf Tukur as the INEC National Commissioner for the North West. Tukur, who has extensive experience with INEC, began his career there in 1999 as an assistant chief administrative officer. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become the Director of Electoral Operations and Logistics. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts from Bayero University in Nigeria, a postgraduate diploma in Economics from Bradford University in England, and a Master of Arts from Leeds University, also in England. Tukur’s appointment will still need to be confirmed by the Senate.
In addition, Tinubu nominated lawyer Saseyi Feyijimi Ibiyemi to fill the position of Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State. This position became vacant after the previous REC, ‘Niyi Ijalaye, passed away in August. If confirmed by the Senate, Ibiyemi, who currently serves as INEC’s Administrative Secretary in Lagos State, will take on this role. She hails from Ilaje, Ondo State, graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987, and was called to the bar in 1988.
These appointments, once confirmed by the Senate, will support INEC in its mission to oversee fair and credible elections in Nigeria.
