Mother of Kenyan woman killed by boyfriend urges people in abusive relationships to seek help: “She was eager to settle down at 29.”

In a powerful message, Connie Muuru, a Kenyan mother, shares the tragic story of her daughter, Sharon Muuru, who was killed by her boyfriend, Salim Seem, in 2016. Connie’s aim is to raise awareness about the dangers of domestic violence and encourage those in abusive relationships to seek help.

Sharon was just 29 years old and eager to settle down before turning 30. In her desperation to find a partner, she ignored the warning signs of abuse and remained with her boyfriend. Connie shared her daughter’s photos on social media to remind others of the importance of recognizing and addressing abuse before it’s too late.

“I’m not sharing my daughter’s story for sympathy,” Connie wrote in her Facebook post. “I want to pass a strong message to those who reach out to me about their own experiences with abuse. You can lose your life in the blink of an eye.”

Connie warns people to think carefully about their relationships. She emphasizes that friends and family who encourage someone to stay in an unhealthy situation won’t be there to help if tragedy strikes. She highlights that emotional struggles like depression can be just as dangerous as physical abuse, often leaving individuals feeling hopeless.

Connie urges women to take their time getting to know their partners before moving in together. She reflects on Sharon’s choice to live with someone she didn’t know well and how it led to devastating consequences. “My daughter saw a future husband; she didn’t see her murderer,” Connie said. “I wish she had waited instead of marrying someone who ultimately took her life.”

Before her untimely death, Sharon had spent eight years living in Belgium before returning to Kenya and connecting with her boyfriend. Connie’s heartfelt message serves as a warning to all women: be cautious and value yourself. “You don’t have to live with someone who has no respect for you,” she advises.

As Connie remembers her daughter, she concludes with a touching tribute: “May your beautiful soul continue resting in eternal peace, my baby girl. I still can’t believe you are gone.”

Through her story, Connie Muuru hopes to inspire others to seek help, recognize the signs of abuse, and prioritize their safety in relationships.
