On October 1, 2024, as Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day, a nationwide protest called #FearlessInOctober has kicked off in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. The protest began early, with demonstrators gathering at Utako market around 7 a.m. to voice their concerns.

This protest is an extension of the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations that took place from August 1 to 10, which were ignited by the ongoing economic struggles faced by many Nigerians. Damilare Adenola, the Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, expressed deep concerns about the difficult economic conditions, attributing them to the policies of the Federal Government.

In response to the protest, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has assured residents that they will ensure a safe and smooth Independence Day celebration. SP Josephine Adeh, the police spokesperson, stated that adequate personnel and equipment have been deployed throughout Abuja in preparation for the day’s events.

The police plan to implement several safety measures, including deploying Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) personnel and anti-riot equipment. They will also use visibility policing to monitor the situation. Traffic diversions will be in place in areas expected to draw large crowds, such as Central Area and Eagle Square.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police emergency numbers to help maintain peace during the celebrations.
