President Tinubu Orders Creation of Disaster Relief Fund After Maiduguri Floods

establishment of a Disaster Relief Fund to help Nigeria manage the increasing frequency of natural disasters, which have become more common in recent years. This decision comes after the devastating Maiduguri floods that caused significant damage to lives and property.

Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, made the announcement during a media briefing. He emphasized the urgency of preparing for more frequent disasters, especially with the growing impact of climate change. The government sees the need for special funding to meet these new challenges.

The recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, was particularly severe, affecting nearly half of the city. The floods claimed several lives and destroyed important infrastructure, prompting a national response. The Federal Government is determined to mobilize resources and support from key stakeholders to contribute to the Disaster Relief Fund, ensuring that the nation is better prepared for future emergencies.

This fund will be crucial in ensuring rapid response and aid to affected areas, minimizing the loss of life and damage caused by similar events in the future.
