Edo Election: Military and Police Increase Security in Benin City

As Benin City prepares for a crucial governor election, security measures have been significantly heightened. Voters will soon head to the polls to select a new leader to succeed outgoing governor Godwin Obaseki. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation, but heightened security reflects concerns for a smooth and safe voting process.

Reports indicate that voters are already on their way to polling stations, eager to make their voices heard. To ensure their safety, the Nigerian Army and police have implemented strict security protocols, including numerous roadblocks across major routes in the city.

Several major streets have been impacted by these security measures:

Ekenwa Road: Military personnel have set up barriers at the Agho and Joromi junctions, causing significant delays for motorists trying to navigate the area.

Oba Market Road and Surroundings: Roadblocks have also been established on Ebiwe, Forestry, and Mission Road junctions, complicating access for voters traveling to polling stations.

Sokponba Junction: This busy area has seen an increased military presence, with additional roadblocks along Sapele and Airport Roads, which are crucial for traffic flow in and out of the city.

These vehicles are stationed strategically at Akakpava Road, close to the Central Bank of Nigeria, providing a visible deterrent and enhancing the overall security presence.

The increased military and police presence has led to some frustration among residents and voters who find their usual routes blocked. While these measures are intended to maintain order and safety, they have also raised concerns about accessibility for those trying to reach polling locations.

Local officials and security personnel are encouraging voters to plan their journeys in advance, allowing extra time to navigate roadblocks. It’s essential for residents to stay informed about which streets are closed and to follow any instructions from security forces.

As the election draws near, community leaders emphasize the importance of peaceful participation in the democratic process. Voters are urged to remain calm and focused on casting their ballots. The goal is to ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate without fear or disruption.

With tensions high and security measures in place, the people of Benin City stand at the crossroads of an important democratic exercise. The hope is that this election will proceed smoothly, paving the way for a new chapter in local governance.

In the meantime, residents are reminded to stay alert, comply with security directives, and ensure that their voices are heard in the upcoming election.
