The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) is taking steps to address the challenges its members face in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. The association plans to discuss excessive taxes and poor road conditions with the governments of both states, aiming to create a more business-friendly environment.
MAN’s leadership expressed concern over how multiple taxes have made it difficult for businesses to operate smoothly. According to Bishop Usen Umoh, the Chairman of MAN’s Akwa Ibom and Cross River branch, the heavy tax burden is shrinking profits and discouraging new investments. He emphasized the need for dialogue with the government to simplify the tax system.
In addition to taxes, bad roads have been a major issue for manufacturers in the region. Umoh highlighted the poor state of the Calabar-Itu road, a key route for transporting goods between Akwa Ibom and Cross River. The deteriorating road conditions have led to delays and higher costs, hurting businesses that rely on timely delivery of raw materials and finished products.
Umoh called on the state governments to work with the federal government to prioritize fixing this vital road, along with other critical routes in the area. He stressed that better infrastructure would help manufacturers remain competitive both locally and globally.
Foreign exchange volatility is another pressing concern for manufacturers in the region. The unstable value of the naira has increased the cost of raw materials and production, creating financial strain for businesses. Umoh urged the government to implement a stable and predictable forex policy to support long-term planning.
Lastly, rising energy costs are adding to the challenges faced by manufacturers. The surge in diesel prices, combined with higher electricity tariffs, has driven up production costs. Many businesses depend on diesel due to unreliable electricity, making energy expenses a significant burden.
MAN is hopeful that through dialogue with the state governments, these issues can be resolved, leading to a better business environment for manufacturers in Akwa Ibom and Cross River.
