Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm to strike Asia in 2024, has wreaked havoc across Myanmar, resulting in at least 226 deaths and 70 people still missing. This catastrophic event has left more than half a million individuals affected, with extensive flooding impacting 84 townships, including the capital, Naypyidaw. The situation has forced tens of thousands of people to seek shelter in relief camps, straining Myanmar’s already limited resources.
The typhoon has caused massive damage, submerging over 158,000 homes and completely destroying 2,116 others. The flooding has overwhelmed local infrastructure, leading to severe disruptions. Relief efforts are being conducted in 438 camps across the country, but the scale of the disaster has made it challenging to meet the needs of all those affected.
Myanmar’s leader, Min Aung Hlaing, has issued a rare appeal for international assistance, acknowledging the severe strain on the country’s resources. The government is actively seeking help from other nations to aid in rescue and relief operations.
India has responded promptly by sending 10 tons of aid, including essential supplies such as food, clothing, and medicine. Despite this support, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has estimated that around 631,000 people have been impacted by the typhoon. The U.N. has indicated that the death toll may rise as more information becomes available and rescue operations continue.
Typhoon Yagi’s effects extend beyond Myanmar. In Thailand, heavy rains have led to floods that have claimed at least 45 lives and affected 28,000 households. The disaster has been compounded by ongoing adverse weather conditions.
Vietnam has also suffered significant damage. The typhoon has been described as the most powerful storm to hit the country in decades, causing over 350 deaths and damages estimated at $1.6 billion. This has intensified concerns about the increasing strength of tropical cyclones linked to global warming.
Rescue and relief efforts in Myanmar are being hampered by damaged infrastructure, ongoing armed conflicts, and limited funding. The junta spokesperson, Major General Zaw Min Tun, has announced that a comprehensive damage assessment is underway to determine the full extent of the disaster and the required support.
The Myanmar meteorology department has issued warnings of continued heavy rains and rising river levels, particularly near the Sittaung River, which has already exceeded its danger level by five feet. This situation is expected to worsen, especially in three provinces, including the conflict-ridden Rakhine State.
