Gov Yusuf orders immediate regulation of sand mining near Kano water plants

Abba Kabir Yusuf has instructed the Ministry of Water Resources to immediately regulate sand mining activities around water treatment plants in Kano State.

The order came on Tuesday during his inspection of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, which was part of his tour of water facilities across the state.

A statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, explained that the move is meant to protect important water infrastructure and guarantee a steady supply of clean water for residents.

Governor Yusuf raised concerns about increasing sand mining near water treatment facilities, warning that it could disrupt water production and distribution.

He said, “Unregulated sand mining poses a serious threat to the smooth operation of our water treatment plants. We must act quickly to protect these facilities for the benefit of our people.”

Yusuf instructed the ministry to strengthen monitoring and enforcement to make sure sand mining does not damage water sources or interfere with treatment processes.

He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to providing safe drinking water across Kano State and called on stakeholders to cooperate in protecting public utilities.

The governor added, “We remain committed to providing clean and safe water to our citizens, and this can only be achieved if we protect the systems that make it possible.”
