Political activist Aisha Yesufu has claimed that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were allegedly bribed to remove the leadership of the African Democratic Congress.
She made this claim during a live interview, where she spoke about recent developments concerning the party’s leadership crisis.
Yesufu, who is also a co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls movement, said there are reports suggesting that even the INEC chairman may have been pressured or threatened into taking such actions.
It would be recalled that INEC recently removed David Mark as the national chairman of the party.
Sharing her views, Yesufu alleged that some INEC officials may have received bribes of up to $50,000 and even landed properties. She questioned why anti-corruption agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission have not taken action.
She also expressed concern about the role of the judiciary, accusing it of being influenced by corrupt politicians. According to her, reports of gifts and secret meetings involving judicial officers raise serious doubts about fairness in the system.
Yesufu stressed that institutions are expected to be independent, transparent, and accountable. She said if these values are upheld, issues like bribery and manipulation would not happen.
She added that political disputes should be resolved properly in court, but warned that when institutions and the judiciary are used against opposition parties, it becomes a serious threat to democracy.
Finally, she noted that many Nigerians fought and sacrificed for democracy, and it should not be destroyed by a few individuals trying to hold on to power unfairly.
