The Cross River State government has taken another step toward preparing for the introduction of state police by opening a Southern District office of its Homeland Safety and Security Agency in Calabar.
Governor Bassey Otu said the goal of this move is to improve security at the grassroots level across the state.
So far, about 1,300 individuals have been recruited to support community policing efforts in the state’s three senatorial districts.
Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Emmanuel Ironbar, the governor said the plan shows his administration’s commitment to improving security and gathering useful information from local communities.
He noted that insecurity used to make residents fearful, but the situation has improved, and this new step will help reduce crime even further.
The governor also praised the dedication of the volunteers, adding that the government is continuing to strengthen local security systems.
He explained that the Homeland Security structure is meant to act as the first line of response and intelligence gathering within communities.
He encouraged personnel to stay alert and report any suspicious activity, stressing that recruitment will be done carefully with community involvement to ensure trust and effectiveness.
The Southern District Director of the agency, Michael Nsan, said the 1,300 volunteers are already assisting in security operations.
He added that they are working closely with other security agencies to maintain safety.
According to him, their efforts helped reduce crime, especially during the recent festive period.
He also explained that the agency has several intelligence teams focused on improving surveillance and quick response to threats.
Nsan said volunteers are currently undergoing training and proper screening before they are fully employed.
To support their work, the state government has provided 14 motorcycles to help with patrol duties, especially in areas that are difficult to access.
The event took place at the same time across all three senatorial districts, with Calabar hosting the southern zone, while Ikom and Ogoja hosted the central and northern zones.
