The Nigeria Union of Journalists has reacted strongly to a statement made by Nyesom Wike, describing it as shocking and unacceptable after he made remarks about Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television.
Wike had earlier said during a media chat that if he had the chance, he would have smashed his TV screen and even shot the journalist, following comments made about the dangers of a one-party system.
The NUJ said such a statement is a serious attempt to scare and silence journalists, warning that it threatens press freedom and democracy in the country.
The union explained that it initially chose not to respond immediately, hoping the minister would reconsider his words and apologise.
However, it said Wike’s failure to withdraw or correct his statement suggests that the comment may have been intentional rather than a mistake.
According to the NUJ, this silence has increased concerns and gives the impression that the threat was deliberate.
In a statement signed by its president, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union described the remark as dangerous and capable of creating fear among journalists.
It added that such comments send a wrong signal that speaking the truth could lead to threats or violence, which goes against the idea of a free society.
The NUJ therefore demanded that Wike issue an immediate and clear apology for his remarks.
The union also called on the Federal Government to openly condemn the statement and show its commitment to protecting journalists and media independence.
It stressed that authorities must take real steps to ensure journalists can do their work without fear of being attacked or threatened.
Finally, the NUJ urged media organisations, civil groups, and democracy supporters to stand together against any attempt to silence the press.
It concluded by saying that protecting journalists is very important for democracy, and any attack on press freedom must be strongly resisted.
