Akwa Ibom communities clash over Rep Etteh’s second term bid

Two political groups in Akwa Ibom State have taken different positions over the second term ambition of Okpolupm Etteh, who represents the Eket/Onna/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency.

The Eket People Union had earlier announced that it would no longer support Etteh’s second term bid, claiming that he had failed to meet their expectations.

However, another group, the Esit Eket Grassroots Network, rejected that position, saying the statement made by the EPU was misleading and did not reflect the views of the entire Ekid people.

In a statement released after a stakeholders’ meeting in Uyo, the EGN explained that the EPU cannot speak for everyone in the community and that its opinion should not be seen as the general view.

The statement was signed by several community leaders, showing that many stakeholders were part of the meeting.

The EGN criticised the EPU for trying to present its opinion as the voice of the whole community, describing such action as unfair and misleading.

The group also said that leadership decisions should be based on performance and ability to deliver, not on ethnic or sectional interests.

It added that people have the right to choose their leaders freely without pressure or false information.

The EGN praised Etteh for his work in the constituency, especially in areas like youth empowerment and development projects.

In conclusion, the group openly supported Etteh’s second term bid, along with that of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Umo Eno, saying their leadership is important for continued development at different levels.
