Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has faulted the response of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the recent killings in Plateau State. He said the government’s reaction lacked empathy and true leadership during a time of national grief.
In a statement shared on his X page, Obi stressed that leadership during tragedy should go beyond formal visits. According to him, leaders must show compassion and physically connect with affected communities.
He recalled a previous visit by the president to Benue State in 2025, where he allegedly did not visit victims directly. Obi added that a similar approach was seen in Jos, where engagement reportedly ended at the airport.
Obi argued that addressing grieving citizens from a distance does not reflect genuine concern. He insisted that people who have lost loved ones deserve leaders who stand with them in their moment of pain.
Following his remarks, many Nigerians took to social media to share their views. Some users criticised the government, saying insecurity has become politicised and poorly handled.
Others called for more compassionate leadership, stressing that victims of violence need real support and presence. The reactions highlight growing concerns about how leaders respond to national crises.
