Gunmen abduct Sokoto residents as police intensify rescue operation

Gunmen attacked a community in Sokoto State late at night, kidnapping several people and leaving others injured. The police in the state have confirmed the incident and said efforts are ongoing to rescue the victims.

The attack happened around 11 p.m. on Wednesday in Chacho community, located in Wurno Local Government Area. Residents were thrown into fear as armed men entered the village through a route believed to be connected to the Sabon Birni forest.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ahmad Rufai, confirmed the incident during a phone call on Friday. He explained that security officers were quickly sent to the area and have started working to find the attackers and rescue those kidnapped.

He said the police are aware of what happened and have already taken action. Special teams have been deployed, and investigations are ongoing to know the exact number of people taken.

People who witnessed the attack said it happened while many residents were asleep. The sudden gunshots forced people to run for their lives in different directions.

One resident said they were sleeping outside when they heard the alarm. Everyone immediately started running to safety while gunshots were heard across the village.

Reports show that about nine people, mostly women and elderly men, were taken by the attackers. Two others were injured and are currently receiving treatment.

The police spokesperson assured the public that efforts are being made to restore peace in the area. He also asked residents to stay alert and support security agencies with useful information.

He added that the police are committed to protecting lives and property and encouraged anyone with helpful details to come forward.

The incident has increased fear among residents, as cases of bandit attacks continue to rise in the area. Many people are now calling for stronger and constant security presence to prevent future attacks.
