As Nigeria moves toward the 2027 general elections, political conversations are growing stronger about who can challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. While many believe the ruling party still holds an advantage, others say the race is still open for strong opposition figures.

An elder statesman from Rivers State, Kingsley Wali, has pointed to Peter Obi as the opposition figure with the strongest support base. He believes Obi has built a loyal following that could shape the outcome of the election.

Wali explained that many young Nigerians and first-time voters are drawn to Obi’s message. He said this group sees Obi as a possible solution to long-standing challenges in the country.

According to him, Obi’s popularity is especially strong in the South-East Nigeria. He described this support as a “vote bank,” meaning a reliable base of voters who consistently back the candidate.

Wali also noted that Obi enjoys support from some voters in northern Nigeria, especially among Christians and moderates. These groups, he said, view Obi as someone who represents fairness and national unity.

However, he admitted that while Obi may not be seen as the perfect politician, many Nigerians believe he represents a chance for positive change. This perception, he added, could make Obi a key contender in the 2027 elections.
