Adewole Adebayo, a former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has said that the true purpose of politics is to deliver good governance, not to serve personal interests.
He made this statement during a meeting in Osun State, which brought together groups like Afenifere, Northern Elders Forum, and Arewa Consultative Forum, among others.
Adebayo explained that Nigeria was built through cooperation among leaders from different regions during constitutional talks in London. According to him, the foundation of the country was based on unity, fairness, and shared development goals.
He noted that earlier political systems focused on improving the lives of citizens, but military rule changed that direction. He said many of today’s political practices still reflect those past influences.
The former SDP candidate stressed that politics should be about serving the people and creating policies that benefit everyone. He warned against treating politics as a business venture for personal gain.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to return to the original purpose of governance, emphasizing that leadership must focus on the welfare of the people rather than selfish ambitions.
