A Nigerian man, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 56-year-old Nila Patel in Leicester. The 24-year-old attacked the woman after crashing his vehicle while under the influence of cannabis.
The incident occurred on June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road, where Patel was walking home after getting off a bus. Police reports stated that Ahanonu was driving erratically before the crash.
After colliding with his vehicle, Ahanonu fled the scene and assaulted Patel. The attack left the victim fatally injured, leading to the life sentence handed down by Leicester Crown Court.
A jury found Ahanonu guilty of murder following a trial, and the court confirmed the severity of his actions in the sentencing on Tuesday. Authorities highlighted the dangerous driving and subsequent violent act as key factors.
Police described the driver’s behavior before the crash as swerving between lanes, ignoring traffic signals, and putting pedestrians at serious risk. The case has drawn attention to road safety and violent crime concerns in Leicester.
Ahanonu’s conviction serves as a stern warning against reckless driving and violent conduct, reinforcing the UK judiciary’s commitment to public safety and justice for victims.
