Soccer Fest: Abia Govt promises fairness, bans LGA teams from playing at home soils

The Abia State Government has introduced a new rule for the State Finals of the Abia Soccer Fest, banning teams from playing on their home grounds. The decision is aimed at promoting fairness and eliminating home advantage during matches.

The fixtures were officially unveiled in Umuahia, where government officials explained that the move would create a level playing field for all participating teams across the local government areas.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, alongside the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, revealed that about 60 young football talents had already been discovered in earlier stages of the competition.

They added that the finals would serve as another opportunity to identify more promising players who could progress to Nigerian league clubs, junior national teams, and even secure opportunities with foreign clubs in Europe.

The government emphasized that the tournament is not just about competition but also about youth development, unity, and reducing involvement in social vices among young people in the state.

Representing Governor Alex Otti, Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu encouraged participants to take the opportunity seriously and strive to become future stars at both state and national levels.
